Aproaching the present moment with a particular mindset can make a huge difference to how much you get out of life. In his book ‘Full Catastrophe Living’, Jon Kabat Zinn outlined a number of attitudes which serve to restore a sense of wellbeing, calmness, wonder and amazement, which all too often eldues us.

The original seven attitudes mentioned above are:

  • Acceptance
  • Beginner’s mind
  • Letting go
  • Non-judging
  • Non-striving
  • Patience
  • Trust

Lots has been written on each of the above, many insights and words of wisdom can be found in books and the internet.

My advice would be to first explore what each of these notions mean to you. Then take a look around at what other people say.

The extra two…

A number of years after writing his book Mr Kabat Zinn felt there should be attitudes which related to how we connect with each other. So the following two were added:

  • Gratitude
  • Generosity

There we have it, the nine magnificent attitudes to appraoch mindfulness with. The great thing about them is that they are interconnected. You don’t have to be thinking about all of them. By focusing on one of them, it leads you to applying the others.

There is a lot to write on this so please be patient (no pun intended) and more will soon follow!
